A Recipe from the Kitchen Table in 2010
This was one of my kitchen table formulae from 2010, and it’s remained unchanged ever since. When you think that something’s right, leave it and try to avoid tinkering with it as there’s always the temptation to make unnecessary changes.
Anyone who makes their own products should bear this in mind. Sometimes it’s good to trust your gut feeling. I have personally ruined many products by overworking them when I should have left them alone and just trusted my instinct.
Beeswax: Nature’s Noble Protective Shield
There is nothing quite like beeswax, which is why it’s my favourite ingredient of them all. It’s a natural emollient, forming a breathable barrier on the lips to lock in moisture and shield against the elements, whether that’s the bitter cold of an Edinburgh winter’s morning or the drying effects of a summer breeze.
There’s something truly magic about beeswax. In the early days of the company, I used to drive all over Scotland buying beeswax directly from beekeepers before I was able to find a reliable supplier.
Cocoa Butter: Deep Nourishment
Cocoa butter, rich in fatty acids, brings intense hydration and helps repair dry, chapped lips. It’s luxurious, deeply moisturising, and, I must admit, rather expensive, since the recent crop failure in 2024 caused the price to increase by 350%, but worth every penny for its incredible skin-conditioning benefits and luxurious feel.
Rose Geranium and Sweet Orange Essential Oils: A Classic Blend
The signature scent of our lip balm comes from a well-balanced blend of rose geranium and sweet orange essential oils. The floral warmth of rose geranium pairs beautifully with the uplifting, citrusy freshness of sweet orange. If the scent feels familiar, that’s because it’s the same blend found in Turkish Delight.
