The first scent I made was at home in the back room, after I’d been temporarily banned from the kitchen. Way back in the 1990’s I’d lived in the heart of rural Provence for a few months. I’d truly fallen in love with the culture, scents and tastes of the region, so I really wanted to make a scent blend to remind me of Provence and to honour the memory of my beautiful time there.

The first thing I did was open a bottle of French Lavender essential oil and pour a carefully weighed measure into a glass beaker. Lavender is floral and woody, so the next question was, how do I make a sophisticated scent blend with Lavender as the base? I really didn’t know anything about blending back then so I had to use my best judgement based on intuition, but luckily, the answer was Rose Geranium, Sweet Orange, Lime, Frankincense, Myrrh and lastly, Clove. Using this blend, I was able to create a classic low, middle and high note scent which I immediately christened “Luxury No.1”

This is our signature scent and is loved worldwide. I often think that there was some kind of divine intervention in this scent as it was so straightforward to mix. I was lucky, and it just worked beautifully, right from the word go. Since that night back in 2010, the formula has stayed exactly the same and will remain with us forever as the scent that launched The Edinburgh Natural Skincare Company.
